Last weekend I got to put my advocacy juices to work at the NBC 4 Health and Fitness Expo. This is the second time that I've represented the Lupus Foundation of America at an Expo or Fair. As usual we were busy my entire shift and I ended up staying almost an extra hour. While answering questions, sharing my story, and giving information, I was reminded of why I became an advocate in the first place. To help others! I spoke with so many people I started to got hoarse. I was surprised to see a number of people coming to the booth, just because they were curious to find out more about Lupus. People who had no personal, professional or family ties stood there as I (most likely) bombarded them with information. From what Lupus was to how it can have multiple symptoms in different patients. I'm always surprised to meet people like this because they really have no reason to talk to me, except for the sheer purpose of educating themselves about a disease they never heard of. I find that very admirable. This is the first Expo that I didn't have a chance to walk around and check out other organizations.
But truth be told, I was overwhelmed when making a game plan as to which direction to start in.
